Corruption Cure
In the early days following the Voidfall (when reality developed a worrying tendency to tear open at inconvenient places, and Corruption spread across the Domineum like an especially stubborn and frustrating mold), most people chose one of two sensible options: run away, or die heroically. But not alchemist Veylan Threx of House Ilravos. He chose a third one.
Where others saw horror, despair, and the end of all existence, Threx saw excitement, opportunity, and, as he used to call it, scientific fun. While fleets burned and Houses fell, Threx could be found leaning perilously close to unstable Rifts, carefully bottling samples of raw Corruption and putting labels on them such as “Screams When Tickled” or “Tastes Like Old Sewers.” This, it should be noted, was widely considered a poor survival strategy.
Unsurprisingly, Threx became extremely corrupted. What was surprising, however, was that this seemed to have no negative effect on him whatsoever. As it later turned out, Threx was one of the earliest psionics. Which meant that, while the Voidborn’s manipulation failed to take hold, Threx listened to the incessant whispering in his mind with enthusiastic curiosity. He didn’t understand much of it, of course (it would be generous to say he understood any of it), but at one point he became convinced that a particularly otherworldly sequence of sounds was, in fact, a personal insult directed at his rather prominent ears.
With the determination of a man who refuses to be insulted by extradimensional entities, he resolved to evict his impolite guest from his mind once and for all. Eventually, through a combination of his hard-earned samples and a series of questionable scientific methods, he devised a cocktail capable of neutralizing Corruption entirely. Then, he proceeded to test it on himself. Repeatedly. By the time the treatment began to work, so did the side effects.
When Threx awoke the next cycle, the Corruption was gone, along with his short-term memories, his long-term memories, and the memory of the formula. In fact, he was entirely unaware that he had ever been ill, let alone cured himself.
Fortunately, he had documented everything. Recently, after extensive effort, a team of archivists, historians, and one very eager intern managed to reconstruct the recipe from Threx’s personal database. It is, we are told, highly effective at preventing Corruption, and particularly recommended for those experiencing persistent, intrusive Voidborn whispering. Consumption is advised in moderation.
Preferably more moderation than Threx.
